      August 25th, 2016

Welcome to the 1st (and longest, I promise) edition of the Weekly Roundup for the 2016-17 school year!  The first few days of school have been wonderful!  It has been so nice to see the students in the hallways!  I will publish a new Weekly Roundup each Thursday to push information out to our Families.  Please save the following web address: http://nbjhroundup.blogspot.com/.  I will send a School Reach email each week to alert you of a new post.  I will also post the link to our Facebook and Twitter accounts.

On behalf of the staff at New Berlin Junior High School, I am so happy to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year! We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential.  We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our children need support from both home and school.  We know a strong partnership with you will make a huge difference in your child’s education.  As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities.

      • Google Drive Families Folder
        • Communication is very important to me.  I’m always pushing information to families to help ensure families and students are prepared and successful.  In an attempt to continue to streamline this process and make sure information is always at your fingertips, I have created a folder in which I will “drop” all important documents and materials to easy access.  Here is the link: https://goo.gl/pbR90Z.  Don’t worry; it’s linked all over the JH website, so you can find it anytime as long as you have access to the web.  The folder is already full of valuable information and as the year progresses I will continue to add documents as I send them out to you.
      • ZAP (Zeros are not Permitted)
        • One obstacle to academic success is the failure to complete assigned homework. Without a student’s completion of homework, teachers are left with little choice but to assume the child does not understand the concepts from class. The goal of the ZAP program is to provide support for students, promote responsibility and good study habits, reinforce the value of hard work and effort, and foster good communication between home and school. With this in mind, students who choose not to turn in work will immediately be placed into the ZAP program (*More information in the Google Folder)
      • Communication
        • Communication is extremely important to us.  We communicate in several different ways and I want to make sure you are aware so you are able to access all relevant information about New Berlin Junior High.  Because technology provides us with a quick way to deliver information to a large audience, most of the information will be in digital format. Examples of digital communication include:
          • Daily Announcements – These are posted to the Daily Announcements page on the website.  These are updated every morning
          • Daily Assignments – Assignments are posted on the Daily Assignments page on the website.  Teachers update their lesson plans frequently.  You will have access to homework, upcoming projects/tests, and the agenda/objective for each day.
          • Skyward – You can see your child’s grades in real time by logging into Skyward.  If you don’t have access, email Mrs. Owens  - lowens@pretzelpride.com) to gain access.

          • Pretzel PressJr. – This publication is published by our 8th grade students under the guidance of Mrs. Tom.  The link can be found on the website as well.
          • Discipline – All discipline notifications will be automatically sent via email as soon as they are entered.
          • New Berlin Junior High maintains a Facebook page (New Berlin Junior High) and Twitter Account (@NewBerlinJH) to announce Character Counts! weekly nominees, important announcements, and other fun happenings at the JH.  Please like us to stay up to date.
          • Athletics – New Berlin Athletics maintains both a Facebook page (Pretzel Athletics) and a Twitter account (@nbpretzelpride).  Announcements, cancellations, and scores are posted regularly to these accounts.
      • Only a few types of communication will come via postal mail.  Examples of written communication include:
        • Report Cards
        • Athletic Eligibility Reports
        • Discipline – In addition to receiving an email notification, you will also receive notification via mail (with the exception of lunch detention)
      • Character Counts!  Our character of the month is responsibility.  A person of character meets the demands of duty, is accountable, pursues excellence, and exercises self-control.  Our students of character for the week are Blake Edwards (6th) and Ariana Wankerl (7th).

      July 2016

Welcome back to New Berlin Junior High-almost!  We are looking forward to a very exciting and rewarding school year.  I just wanted to bring some information to your attention to help you prepare for the upcoming 2016-17 school year.  It will be here before you know it!!  We are already preparing for our students to return in just a few short weeks!
      • Once the school year begins, you will hear from me weekly through the Weekly Roundup!  I send this out via email and links can be found all over the website to our JH Roundup page.
          • In the meantime, I encourage you to browse the website and the JH links to familiarize yourself with where you can locate information.
          • Additionally, peruse the Weekly Roundup and the information that can be found down the sides of the page.  These links will also direct you to critical information.
      • I have updated the important dates section in the Weekly Roundup!  Check out the upcoming events for the School District by checking back frequently.
        • Have you signed up for the Color Run yet?  This is going to be BIG FUN!  Don't miss out!
      • SAVE THE DATE - The Back to School Festival will be held on 8/20.
      • NBJH Families Google Drive Folder - What's this?  I have created a folder in Google Drive that will house important documents for the school year.  The folder already contains important information (calendar, school supply list, pre-arranged absence form, how to get missing work when you miss school, etc.).
        • We hope you find this folder valuable.  There will be links all over the website to help guide you to this information.  Each time I send out a School Reach email with a document, I will add that document to the folder.  It is our hope that you will always be able to easily access information to guide you towards a successful school year.
      • I would like you invite our parents -indeed, urge them- to volunteer at the school.  There are many tasks that volunteers can perform, including sharing your expertise with our students.  If you are interesting in helping out, please call Mrs. Owens (ext. 227 after 8/4) to see what type of volunteer opportunities are available.
      • I will send out a Welcome Back Letter with more information as we get closer to the first day of school (August 22nd - 221 Dismissal).
      • Student schedules are now available on Family Access.  If you do not have Family Access, please email access@cusd16.k12.il.us or Mrs. Owens/Mrs Doerfler to gain access.
        • Notes: The only "elective" that can be modified is band.  If you are enrolled in band, this is considered your grade-level elective.
        • All students cycle through all grade-level electives (the only exception is students that are selected for intervention programs).
        • Please email Mr. Barth ONLY in the following circumstances to have him adjust your schedule:
          • You are missing a class (ex - you have no 2nd hour class or no 3rd trimester elective).
          • You have a class twice (We know you love PE, but you can't take PE twice).
      • Fall Sports!  They start before school begins.  If you need information about the upcoming seasons, please contact the coaches below.
Our goal is to provide all students with the opportunity to excel in academics, athletics, and fine arts so that they may become positive, contributing members of our school and community.

As always, please shoot me an email if you have any questions.  The office will reopen 8/4.
